SH: Shattered Memories

Sat Aug 1, 2009, 10:42 PM
So, an all american team has made the new Silent Hill game. Shattered Memories.
Well, It's shattered for me now... T-T

[link] <---- game trailer. Take in mind this game is for Wii, PS2 and PSP.

They have caught a lot of the atmosphere in the 'normal' Silent Hill, except 1 very important thing; why the hell are the street-lights on?! Come on!

---------------------------
OBS: This is my statement from visuals, next is my worries/speculations/rants/etc... (yeah, I rant a lot, sorry) and I might be proven wrong about all this when it's released, so don't hang me up by everything I say now.

And before you say anything, I'm aware they're re-imagining the game, this is merely my 2 cents.

Also trying not to be too spoilerish if someone reads this, who hasn't played the games yet...
---------------------------

From there it just goes downwards. We have seen the beasties before, sure they may be altered a bit by the new Psyche Profile system, which your shrink will ask you... Your shrink...? It's already set here that 'Harry' will survive. With a shitload of mental issues, but in one piece. It pretty much looks like you're just re-living the whole thing, and they've tried to make it -->survival<--? It's already proven you'll live through it.

Onwards to that Psyche Profile. This is the only interesting part about the game, which they by the looks of it, sadly wasted and failed at here.

The game, environment and monsters, and even the other characters you interact with, will be influenced by how you answer some questions said shrink (I actually suspect that guy to be the new Kauffman, but it's just a wild guess) asks you.
And also if you do certain things during the story-line.

This would actually have been a lot of fun granted they had not removed the ability to fight back the monsters. Why...?
This seems so retarded in conjoncture with this Psyche thing.

All other SH games has had you at the -choise- of fighting or fleeing. Are you a jew with your ammo/meds if you're certain you'll need it even more later, or do you like to eliminate the threat in order to feel safe? Do you re-think this later if you're a fighter with silch ammo and decides it's wiser to flee instead of using the precious ammo (it mostly is hard to come by, and the fighting system's always been slightly corny).

That could probably have made the PP system even more interesting! The idea with it changing invironment and characters ain't actually a bad idea, but they failed with the originality here imo. But what bugs me a lot is that it could have affected your combat effecticity! Like, if you're prone to fleeing, it could unlock evasive moves instead of offensive abilities, say, with the melee weapons, maybe decreased ranged accuracy, being able to climb ledges or hide in more places.

And opposite, if you usually fight off whatever's trying to do something horrible to you, gain offensive abilities with melee weapons, maybe unlock the availability of stronger weapons (I don't mean overpowered weapons, and not with surpluss of ammo), react offensively with the environment...

And this is also because there were obligatory fights in every single other game. But besides those, you -always- had the choise between fight or flight.

The opportunities are boundless!

Another thing is the new high-tech cell phone he appears to use for solving riddles by taking pictures with it. This idea would have rocked my socks -if- it hadn't been for it being high-tech... It could have been an old-time polaroid camera like the one used in a previous game (please please don't hang me up on this one! I really don't remember if it was 2 or 3 T-T)!
Pluss those cameras are famous for being legit on the subjects of capturing ghostly stuff on the pics!

I mean come on! It forces you to explore in-depth, as it's quite easy to give an indication subtly to use it, but still be a little anal about where to stand or so not to make it super-easy to utilize it in a way that'd just make it a drag, instead of something so awesome as this, imo.

And you'd need to do this to solve certain riddles (it's too early on the day for me to think one of these up...) along the way, while still using the same old method of investigating everything that looks investigationable and picking random stuff up to combine them (srsly, it took me ages to figure out that I had to combine those 3 items in the bucket to burn the picture in SH3).

Last but not least, the Otherworld version(s?)... Ica Age on the wrong set anyone? Then I certainly hope there's more Otherworlds then that, because it just doesn't work out for me at all... It worked -way- better with the totally deserted, almost colorless Mist World from SH2, if you're going for the subtle (and yet not, it's screaming desolate ghost town like hell, but in the good way, and it works!), or the rust&blood from SH3. That amusement park really made me uneasy. Especially the haunted house! I almost crapped green pigs in that hallway! And those rabbit (Robbie <3) costumes lying around in mint condition save the blood-smeared faces... Almost always makes you think it's gonna jump on you any second.... But no... They're just... There...

And the storage room with the giant mirror, and it starts to crawl with red worming undefinable stuff on the floor in the reflection, then it comes out on -your- side through a sink! Oh, and the door is locked up untill a certain point here...

And James sticking his arm into various really uninviting holes to get something was so unnerving! I almost always got the idea that "fuck I did something stupid, now I'm gonna die!Dx" I srsly imagined James to get his arm violently ripped off or something else equally horrible at any point...

Then comes the less interactive but just as WTF?! moments... Like James in a quiz-show while riding an elevator, said show having clues from other games! Or Heather picking up a (disconnected!) phone in a locker and some psycho's voice sings her Happy Birthday...

And Lisa when she states she's "the same as them, I just hadn't noticed it before..", this in conjunction of info about a hallucinogenic plant/drug called White Claudia and a couple other indications, really gets your imagination run amock with ideas!

Enough yapping the older stuff (it deserved mention due to epic), this is supposed to be about the new game...

Now this is just the trailer, so I don't know much else about it, but it doesn't spring to me as a game I'd just go out and buy... It just doesn't...

But I urge you to comment, if you want to ofc, I love talking Silent Hill, and I'd love your opinion on the subject

Enough from me, and apologize for the monstrous post!
